Shocking Laws okay in Japan, but illegal around the world. So I’ve made videos before on things you can’t do in Japan because of laws or unknown laws that could get you arrested, but in this video I wanted to switch things up a little and share with you some things that are legal in Japan but may be illegal in other parts of the world. Many think that Japan is a very strict country, but when you hear some of these Japanese laws you may be scratching your head. And to be clear from the start, I don’t recommend doing any of these things. I’m not providing legal advice and this is for entertainment only.

why is noone talking about the age of consent? it's F-ing 13??? it should be raised to 18 or 19…not even 16. Like c'mon
Many seem to have hard knee-jerk reactions to the "grey area for specific cases" part, both here and in other contexts. In the vast majority of countries and states that have this, what it usually boils down to is either explicit laws, clauses and statutes similar to what many English-speaking populations may know as "Romeo and Juliet" statues/laws – and judicial discretionary authority to largely the same effect.
Basically, it grants prosecutory and judging authorities the authority to make case by case discretionary rulings, when one or both parties are under the legal age of consent, and of close age. Fundamentally, the legal minimum age of consent is there to provide strong protections for children and young teens against intimate abuse and exploitation. But everyone and their dog knows quite a significant percentage of youth have their "debuts" earlier than that, and while that is a particularly sensitive age to have such engagements, that doesn't make all young relationships with such intimate components inherently non-consentual or abusive/exploitative. So most somewhat modernized legal frameworks these days do have statutes and judicial discretions to evaluate any such reported or prosecuted instances on a case-by-case basis, including with the aid of professional youth psychology, comprehension and maturity evaluations. So that the spirit of the law remains firm – but it can avoid automatically slapping youth with an incredibly severe and lifelong-consequential criminal convictions based on a technicality, despite the factors that the law seeks to protect them from not really being present (including the power dynamics of larger and more consequential age gaps).

I once taught one of the senior prosecutors in Japan. We talked about age of consent laws. And the national law doesn’t matter, and if the prefectural laws are what counts. And if the prosecutors office deem a crime has occurred, there’s enough in the law for them to pursue a case.

Some of them is outdated now, due to some amendments.
FYI the national age of consent in Japan was raised to 16 in 2023, one year after this video came out. The age of consent is 18 in the Tokyo prefecture.

The defamation thing is weird. But then we can use vigilante justice if everything is considered defamation. Your boss harasses you, you can just drop shit in his desk. He can't say it's you because then you can sue for defamation.

I have daughters in their teens and can attest that consent at 13 is legalized pedophilia.
Even in Italy, defamation can concern true facts, if they are reported with the clear intent to damage someone. And it seems right to me that it should be so, because a fact can have many circumstances around it that can influence the judgment, and when it is told, these circumstances can be omitted or not to manipulate the judgment of those who hear the report.
Wait, I thought this was a video about things that are legal in Japan but illegal elsewhere. The defamation bit is the reverse, no?
