As the popularity of Japanese animated shows and films has skyrocketed over the past decade, a scathing UN report has prompted Japan to act on unfair and exploitative industry practices. Animators and voice actors say the changes are long overdue. Bloomberg’s Shery Ahn reports from Tokyo.

  1. Prepare to be replaced by AI, job or good salaries pick one.

  2. good, imo the quality of anime seems to have declined somewhat in recent years

surely its not just me who thinks that

  3. $13/year is nothing compared to the prices of Japan.

  4. Lol, weird title, I think you mean creators….I thought you meant the characters somehow hahaha

  5. How can anyone survive in Tokyo for mentioned 12800 ?

  6. Well, this is why you don’t let an old-minded politician run your country lol

  7. It seems Japan toxic work culture won't change. There are stories about anime workers of 40 years ago that are creepy.

  8. The better not then we really will be waiting 5 years for everything

  9. Japan crackdown Islam, Christians 😊

  10. not just the anime industry in all industries in Japan. I work as engineer in Japan the annual salary is about $12,000 a year. Someone who works at Mcdonalds in the UK part time gets more than that. They still value work longer hours and harder hence why young people are put off looking for a job. They won’t change their ways to suit the new and younger generations.

  11. There are millions of talented people who would be a part of this industry they only need to ask

  12. I wonder, do they value education and trade more than entertainment and thats why they are paid so low? Its one of the reasons why America isnt the best right now.

  13. Sounds like the Anime industry needs to unionize like the Animation (Guild) industry did in Los Angeles.

  14. *Japanese Game Industry has entered the chat*
*Japanese Manga Industry has entered the chat*
*Japanese VFX Industry has entered the chat*

  15. I fear with the rise of Ai production, these animators might have it even worse soon

  16. I think they’re taking advantage of the “dream” factor of aspiring animators.

  17. They say anime animators work until they vomit and pass out.

  18. The workers need to be well-paid and treated better. There should be more company policies to help protect them from any kind of harassment.🤔

  19. Labour exploitation… Meanwhile investors are getting their returns… I expect that with time the number of people wanting to work in this industry will start to diminish. Then… We will get AI sludge…

  20. Important context: US animators make more than them (even adjusting for exchange rates) and have much better hours because we have a strong union and their efforts to unionize were outlawed back in the 70s. Our voice actors are also taken care of by a union. Now, only after realizing how important of a cultural export their industry is does the Japanese government step in to beg producers to pay them more. What a load of crap.

  21. "At least living wages" !? What? Animators and voice actors are stars, millions of people watch them around the world, so disappointed to hear this. They should be paid like stars smh.

  22. Makes no sense! The products are being consumed globally. No reason to pay workers nothing, or very little unless they aren't selling their product at a decent price!

  23. Typical japanese culture. Abuse who you can. The lesser known culture of japan.

  24. Of course they waited decades and conveniently do it when the AI boom is taking over.

  25. Really troubling times now and also not easy having to work on said anime or shows either.

  26. As someone who dreams of working in the industry this makes me feel so relieved❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

  27. We will never forget that this is the tipping point when we lost an anime/mangaka great. Wishing healing for those working in the anime industry, finally getting the respect needed. 🙌

  28. A hundred years ago, such work places were called sweatshops and were local open secrets. Unlike the 1920s & 1930s, the "dirt" of these labor practices surfaces on social media, so it's just an open secret.
