Love it or hate it, the high school setting in anime is iconic in its own right. But that begs the question, just why is it that anime loves high school. The answer I found goes a lot deeper than you think, and stems from the very core of a huge social problem that plagues Japan – Overworking .

I hope you guys enjoy the video and have fun watching it as much as I had fun making it!

  1. If you just found this video, feel free to support me through my Ko-fi and all my socials in the description of this video. Ive listed down all the music tracks that were used in this vid.

If you are the owner of any of the clips I used in this video and want it replaced or removed, I will respect any permission given.

I had a lot of fun making this video. Between doing research and trying to get the facts right about the topic and balancing it between the emotional storytelling I was going for. I'm really proud of how this video turned out. Also I was horribly sick while recording some parts of the scrip, that's why I sound weird in some parts.

Let me know what you guys think of the video and have fun watching!!!

  2. Reminds me of something i hear in another video at some point on the American teen movies. "These are the best years of your life" was never about your teenage years being good, it was about how after this, things get worse, That expectations and responsibilities would pile on while freedoms would diminish. And so the phrase "these are the best years of your life" was not a call of happiness, but a declaration of impending misery, people were never happy to hear it, because they knew if this was the best, they had to look forward to, then everything was going to get worse. this is as good as it gets, and if you're not happy, you knew you had nothing left to look forward to.

  3. Mann, I remember my good old day high school era go to school by train without pay any pennies, always fun during sport time, resess time have better food than others countries in the world, go see free backstage wrestling after the class or yourself wrestling (by bullying my enemy dissing them like Dr Tughanomics/John Cena before fight. Ahhh, what a great memories of Malaysian High School experience

  4. It’s almost like the target demographic for these stories are young adults

  5. Bro that last statement just ruined my day thanks 😢😅😅

  6. came for anime, left with depression

  7. Nice video, thank you for making it… and F.O. for complaining about being 25.

  8. I don't understand, they wrote a law allowing workers to go home for one day a week to relieve excess overtime and pressure to go drinking with co-workers, 80% percent of companies defied the order, and no one held them to it… so they just rescinded the law?! Wtf?! Who votes for people who let business destroy their country?! … Oh wait, I live in the US… nevermind.

  9. School forces people into one place where most of the people are peers on the same level. I’d say high school is used to appeal to the widest audience. Maybe you say that though, I can’t watch it rn, will watch later

  10. People in their 20's saying that the 30's mean that one is "old"… i can't stand it.

  11. Anime shows where you quoted (video fragments) from should also be cited in the video description, IMHO. Thanks.

  12. You think you feel old, imagine how old I was in 2024. I was 34 and I still watch anime, some of the classics.

  13. I keep wondering why, if it's a well-known fact that Japan's work culture is inhuman, that the bosses of these companies keep treating their workers the same? It makes no sense.

  14. as someone in a wheelchair who oftens makes fun of himself i appreciate tha joke

  15. borders mean nothing to corporations. Children will always be oppressed by the old to maintain control.

  16. 10:55 Yes, I would actually 😭 JJK has traumatized me enough to want to see Gojo and the rest of the cast live normal lives

  17. Also because they're attracted to high school girls

  18. Anime really gave me the feeling how it could be with friends, I felt the friends around me where so harsh, and in anime the friends where so caring and encouraging. So more aware of showing what where important moments, laying on a bed eating an ice cream. Biking together with the wind in the hair, sharing ramen noodles in the winter. Encouring each other in their goals and dreams.

Though it isnt realistic, anime did show me what was important for me in life.

  19. It’s because Japan is youth obsessed. High school from what I understand is peak life stage. Everybody wants to go back and relive their high school days. Spider-Man is the most popular Marvel movie for a reason.

  20. I’m sorry but I think that your video is a bit shortsighted as you did not address the oversexualisation of and beauty ideals of the literal children depicted in anime at all. I believe this, too, plays a huge role of why anime is set in high school.

  21. Japan and South Korea share many of the same problems as far as not being able to have your own life and free time

  22. Japan and south korea schools vs U.S schools feel like the two opposite extremes, in the U.S you could miss half the semester and still pass xd

  23. This is actually true in many modern societies. People just peak during highschool and refuse to build a better life for themselves. They numbingly accept to live life "by the book": get a job, get married, have kids, buy a car, buy a house. Rarely do people question themselves on what do they really want out of life.
I've known too many people with unhappy marriages and unwanted kids.

  24. well… jobs are pretty boring and high school is when you have time to do stuff and youre also mature enough to get into a story

  25. Have you ever wonder why within a small amount of time in dreams we feel like it actually took longer?
For the man took 15 hours in dream to achieve building empire and family.

Because dream cut all the menial and repetitive tasks away, leaving only epic and fun apart for escapism.

Because if they dont, it is just as torturing as real life.

  26. AVG Looking MC = 6ft tall, dark hair, handsome, athletically gifted

  27. I'm 36 and I've always watched anime but I've really gotten into it recently I really like The slice of Life in romance stuff especially I even like fantasy in high school can bring me back to a time when I really believe in a magical fairy tale relationship or that all my dreams were obtainable and I could do anything I think that's why young high School drama and anime is so popular
